There is always a crate for the mums in the Nursery, a place to rest and retreat as an option to their sofa and the puppy box itself.
As soon as the pups leave the box, they also begin to do as momma does, and enter the crate casually, for the door is always open. They will choose to sleep there rather than returning to the baby box.

Sometimes the mums, like Zoe in this picture, nurse their pups in the crates - a nice association with crates for the pups.
We also leave this soft crate in the puppy room for rest and play. Here Tazman encounters the crate.

Tazman enters the crate happily, dispelling some people's beliefs that dogs don't like such spaces.

The pups also have a tunnel in the puppy yard that is a small cozy crate-like space.  They love this!  Often found sleeping & playing therein, it is a communal cave.  It is also a good introduction to 'tunnels' for agility training!
Here an older pup, LeeLu, still likes to cuddle up in the crate with her momma Tirzah. So, around here, crates are a happy and comfortable place, usually of one's own! Our dogs are always fed in their crates so everyone eats only what is theirs, and they rush eagerly into them!

By the time Kiwi D was going home with her new family, she was curious about her car crate, but not at all alarmed.

Here Kiwi D has settled in happily for the ride home, like a queen on her throne!

Having already gone to the vet, to get tattoos, and to be CERF'd, riding in a car with his siblings in a crate for safety, Jovi is happy to go to his new home by car.

Some people get small crates and later get a larger or soft-sided portable one for the dog at home and on family outings. Others just get one size for feeding and sleeping and travelling with their dogs from puppyhood to adult. Sugar's folks have gone the first route for her go home only puppy-size crate.

Of course, if used to being in a crate, those that have to fly to their new homes are more comfortable going in the required manner! Here Tazzie flies to Toronto at 10 weeks of age, accompanied by a raw bone to gnaw, water in the form of ice, and a scent comfort / stuffy full of the hair of her relatives 'back home'.
